New Lenses for Old Frames? We’d Be Happy to Take a Look!

Smiling woman wearing blue glasses, holding and examining a dark pair of frames in Dietz-McLean Optical store in San Antonio.

For as long as we can remember, we’ve been putting new prescription lenses into frames our
customers already own. While some optical shops choose not to offer this service, we’ve always been happy to explore the possibilities.

After all, just because your prescription has changed doesn’t mean you have to give up a pair of glasses you love.

Maybe it’s a look you can’t find anywhere else, they feel like the comfortable fit of an old pair of shoes, or simply something with sentimental value. Whatever the reason, we understand. We’re here to help!

There’s Often Plenty of Life Left in a Good Frame

Many eyeglass frames have years of useful life remaining, even after the original lenses are no longer right for you.

We’ve worked with everything from vintage Dior and Ray-Ban to delicate Silhouette frames and good old-fashioned zyl. Some are longtime favorites, some are difficult to replace, and others simply fit so well that their owners don’t want to part with them.

We appreciate that. And when it’s practical, we’re glad to help keep those frames in service.

Of course, not every frame can be reused. Before we recommend putting new prescription lenses into an existing frame, we want to make sure it’s up to the job.

What Do We Look for Before Replacing the Lenses?

There’s more to reusing a frame than simply removing the old lenses and putting in new ones.

Our opticians carefully examine the frame to determine whether it can safely accommodate new lenses and continue to provide a comfortable, dependable fit.

With plastic frames, we look at the condition of the material. Has the plastic become brittle? Are there hairline cracks or damaged areas? Are the hinges still securely anchored? We also consider how the new lenses will need to be inserted, since different frames require different techniques.

With metal and rimless frames, we inspect solder joints, hinges, screws, nose pad arms, and lens mounting points. Corrosion, cracks, or weakened connections can make an otherwise attractive frame unsuitable for reuse.

And with every frame, we consider one more important question: Can it still be properly adjusted after the new prescription lenses are installed?

These details matter. We want your glasses to do more than look good. We want them to fit well and serve you comfortably.

Will My New Prescription Work in My Existing Frames?

Often, yes!

Whether you need single-vision lenses, progressives, or another lens design, we’ll consider how your new prescription works with the size, shape, and condition of your existing frames.

Sometimes a change in prescription or lens design makes a particular frame less suitable than it once was. That’s part of the evaluation, and we’ll talk through those considerations with you.

Our goal is to find a solution that makes sense for both your vision and the frames you’d like to keep.

A Little Care for the Frames Too

When possible, we also recondition existing frames as part of the lens replacement process.

After all, if a frame has served you well for years and still has plenty of life left, it deserves a little attention before heading back into everyday use.

We enjoy the challenge of working with well-loved eyewear, especially frames that aren’t easily replaced. There’s something satisfying about seeing a favorite pair ready for another chapter.

And while some frames simply can’t be reused, we’re always willing to take a look and give you our assessment.

Is It Worth Putting New Lenses in Old Frames?

That’s a fair question, and the answer depends on the frame, your prescription, and the lenses you choose.

Sometimes replacing the lenses is a practical alternative to purchasing an entirely new pair. Other times, the condition of the frame or the requirements of your prescription may make new glasses the better choice.

We’d rather help you understand your options than make assumptions about what you need.

And if your frames have sentimental value or are particularly difficult to replace, please tell us. We’ll want to take that into consideration when discussing what’s possible.

Recycle, Reuse, and Enjoy Your Favorite Frames a Little
Longer

We believe there’s something worthwhile about keeping a good pair of glasses in service.

Whether it’s a treasured designer frame, a vintage favorite, or simply the most comfortable pair you’ve ever owned, changing your prescription doesn’t necessarily mean saying goodbye.

There’s life for your frames after their original lenses.

Bring your glasses and current prescription by Dietz-McLean and let us take a look. We’ll
evaluate the frames, discuss your lens options, and help you decide whether they’re ready for another round.

Sometimes the best new glasses start with the frames you already love.

The staff is excellent. Kayla was super helpful. I needed assistance with the temple ends on a vintage pair of Rayban glasses. She replaced them perfectly. She also adjusted them to fit my face better than they were prior. I will return to Dietz-McLean for all of my optical requirements. Thanks Kayla for the top notch service.
