Our Long History of Glasses Repairs

Our family has worked in the optical industry for four generations: as you can imagine, we’ve seen a lot happen to eyeglasses and made every type of repair you could imagine. We’ve used that experience to create this guide, so you can learn from others’ mistakes, avoid some of the more common damage we see, and keep your eyeglasses in prime shape!

Proper Eyeglass Cleaning

Even if you’re extra careful, your eyeglasses are going to get dirty; throughout the day, they’ll accumulate dust, fingerprints, and other types of grime. Following proper glasses maintenance and the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning procedures will keep your eyewear looking clean, clear, and feeling fresh.

Always spray the lens with a non-corrosive cleaning solution that’s marked for use on eyeglasses. And when wiping, use clean microfiber cloths, instead of abrasive materials like paper towels or your shirt, and replace them often. A dry cloth, such as a Kimwipe, will erode the coatings from your lenses, and even a speck of dirt on microfiber can scratch a lens! To clean a dusty lens, rinse the lens to remove the dust, then apply lens cleaner and gently swirl with a clean finger, then wipe in one direction with your microfiber cloth.

Smudges are the result of grease, and require a different cleaning approach, as water won’t help clean them. Gently apply lens cleaner and swirl with a clean finger, then wipe in a single direction with a clean microfiber towel. If you wipe in multiple directions, you’ll just move the mess around the lens!

Don’t Get Bent Out of Shape!

Glasses today are a lot more durable than they were when we started Dietz-McLean Optical, but they’re still not indestructible. Life happens, and if your frames are ever damaged or bent, we’re here for repairs.

But to avoid injuring your eyewear, you can follow some simple rules. Never slide your glasses to the top of your head (no matter what you think, you will forget them). Use both hands when putting on or taking off your eyeglasses. And make sure to use a cord to hang your glasses around your neck, instead of tucking them into a shirt pocket — you’d be shocked how many frames get crushed that way.

Protecting Your Lenses

Your lenses are a crucial part of your clarity, which is why it’s important to avoid scratching or degrading any lens coatings. Always use a hard case for your glasses when you aren’t wearing them, and never throw them into your bag or purse without placing them in a case first. Also, avoid putting your glasses too close to a sink or vanity, especially when getting ready for the day, where they could potentially be exposed to corrosive chemicals.
